Default Difference Between Contract Closure And Administrative Closure For Pmp Exam

While conducting PMP Exam Preparation workshops, I have noticed that many participants are confused about the Contract Closure (Close Procurements) and Administrative Closure (Close Project or Phase) processes.

Which comes first? What are the differences in these 2 processes?

The confusion stems from them working in different organization some come from a buyer organization, whereas others have experience from the sellers organization specially where they work on projects awarded as contracts to their organizations.

  2. Default close phase/project AND close procurements

Closing process group has only 2 processes .

    1.Close phase/close project
    2.Close procurements

Most of the confusion regarding the differences between these 2 processes inlcuding the order in which they are performed , stems from the fact that we need to know why and when they are performed .

Lets take a look into these 2 processes in the closing group :

    A project has multiple contracts

Usually the contract needs to be closed before a project can be closed

A contract may span across multiple phases in the project . So all the contracts may not necessarily be closed at the end of each phase of the project .

Not all projects are performed under contracts . So not all projects require "close procurements" process .

Every project must have a close phase / close project process even if the project is terminated .

For projects performed under contracts , the product / outcome from the contract needs to be verified only once as a part of "close procurements " process .So, if we have verified the product under the "close procurements" process , we need not verify it again in the close project/close phase process .

We get the formal signoff before we write the final lessons learned .
It is important to note here that lessons learned is an activity that is done
    throughout the project .

We need the teams help or writing the lessons learned . So we would write the lessons learned before releasing the team .

Usually releasing the team is one of the last things in the closing process group .

That was a detailed explanation Sabyasachi !

Close Contracts process should always be executed before the Close Project or CLose Project Phase process, if applicable in the project.

I think Administrative Closure is first. Administrative Closure : is done for every phase end with in the project.
Contract Closure : is done at the end of a project.

I also Agree with Pm Campus.
Administrative Closure : is done for every phase end with in the project.
Contract Closure : is done at the end of each contract .
